The lantern slide collection comprises approxiamately 13,000 glass lantern slides, dating circa 1880 to 1968, featuring images ranging in topic from modern painting to industrial design. According to data gleaned from the North American Lantern Slide Survey published in 2004, the Univerisity of Illinois' slide collection is among the largest in the country.
In 2011, a student from the Library and Information Science program created an assesment and preservation strategy for the lantern slide collection which can be found here. Reccomendations in the preservation strategy will be an ongoing process.
